Singing Myth #5: You Either ‘Have Talent’ Or You Don’t?

Even the world’s biggest singing superstars and musicians have had to deal with this ‘talent’ issue.

Some of the greatest singing stars Elvis Presley, The Beatles and Garth Brooks had been rejected because they were labelled at one time or another as having ‘no talent’ and here at Sydney Singing Lessons we want to make it clear that everyone can sing and everyone has talent!

Elvis Presley, the best-selling solo artist in the history of popular music was told by a music teacher he had no aptitude for singing. Garth Brooks returned home after 4-days of rejection in Nashville… and the now infamous Decca Music rejection saying “the Beatles have no future in show business” is considered to be one of the biggest mistakes in music history… and Sydney Singing Lessons agrees!

So now you’re wondering if you have what it takes to sing? Maybe you’ve sung in front of others who’ve told you have no talent? Maybe you’ve been so shy and not let anyone hear your singing voice? Maybe you’ve never been encouraged?

Take Susan Boyle for instance. Since her early years, Susan dreamed of becoming a professional singer. She was rejected many, many, many times. For over 31 years Susan continued to enjoy singing in church choirs and choral societies, karaoke bars and even in hospitals to help the needy in her community. It wasn’t until she was in her 30s she started taking singing lessons from a professional vocal coach, which continued for 6 years. Then at age 47 she decided to enter X-Factor in the UK and was met with much negativity. The team at Sydney Singing Lessons remember seeing that first show on YouTube and the audience was fierce… then she opened up her mouth and an angel’s voice emerged stunning the crowd, wowing the crowd! The rest of course is history and she’s a millionaire now!

Here’s the real deal. Others could be wrong. They’ve been wrong before!

Talent is all in the eye of the beholder.

The Sydney Singing Lessons team remembers the movie Sister Act 2 and how Sister Mary Clarence (Whoopi Goldberg) is taking to Rita Watson (Lauryn Hill) about a book letters to a young poet and how a reader wrote into the author and asked I want to be a writer can you read my stuff! And Whoopi recounts the author wrote back saying “if every morning you wake up and all you can think about is writing, then you’re meant to be a writer”.

And we here at Sydney Singing Lessons agree totally and wholeheartedly with what Whoopi said next “if you wake up in the morning and all you can think about is singing… then you’re meant to be a singer!” That’s a great life lesson too! Work hard, get out there and make connections with producers, singers and publishers and you never know what might happen!

So… Myth BUSTED!singing
